Flavonoid-rich fruits and greens prevent weight gain

Fruits and vegetables have been known to contain at least 6000 different types of flavonoids with flavonols, flavones, flavanones and anthocyanins being the most popular. Different studies have linked dietary flavonoids to weight loss and flavan-3-ol in particular. This flavonoid is naturally found in green tea.

American researchers analyzed the data of a 25 year study which examined the way flavonoids changed the weight of 125,000 men and women aged 25-65.

Every 4 years, the study subjects were required to fill out a questionnaire. The information helped researchers determine the intake of dietary flavonols, flavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and flavonoid polymers.
Every 2 years, all participants were required to fill out a separate questionnaire which informed the researchers of each study subject’s weight, lifestyle habits and diagnosis of any medically assessed conditions.

The researchers discovered that individuals who increased their intake of certain flavonoid types like flavonols, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanins and flavonoid polymers – over the course of the study were less likely to gain weight.

Strawberries and blueberries supplied the majority of anthocyanins present in the study. Green tea and onion accounted for most of the flavonols. Tea and apples supplied most of the flavan-3-ols and their polymers.

The research team says their findings could help offer guidance on which fruits and vegetables are most suitable for healthy weight maintenance. Experts encourage people to be careful with low-fiber, higher-glycemic and starchy vegetables like peas, corn and potatoes because they cause weight gain.
